Marysville Property Taxes...what part is tied to local school taxes?

January 27, 2020

As many may have read in a local article recently published in the Everett Herald (“Property taxes to rise for most” - January 27, 2020)* or learned from a neighbor or friend, property taxes are on the rise locally and in our surrounding communities. What does this mean for a homeowner in the Marysville community and what part us tied to local school taxes?

Property taxes are more than just taxes related to your local schools. Local school taxes are approximately 36% of the total tax bill. The remainder of the tax includes City, Fire/EMT, State, County, and Library districts as well. We encourage each homeowner to learn more about local taxes by visiting the Snohomish County Assessor's office website - HERE. On this site, you can compare taxes for the past three years and look at your personal property tax statement.^

While local school district taxes are part of the increase mentioned in the article, the increase is for all areas mentioned above. Total average property taxes in the City of Marysville are $1,016 less than the average taxes paid in all of Snohomish County - HERE. It is important to note that local school taxes in Marysville are approximately 5% less in 2020 than what homeowners paid in 2018. In addition,  in 2019 average local school taxes in Marysville are lower than surrounding communities^. See the chart below:

As we have shared in district communications around the proposed Capital Levy, the Capital Levy is a new 6-year measure that aims to jumpstart a cycle of continuous improvement to replace outdated schools in Marysville. Based on the average assessed value of a home in Marysville - $370,000 - that increase would be projected at approximately $59 a month. A successful measure would replace two elementary schools; Liberty Elementary (1951) and Cascade Elementary (1955).
