FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 31, 2018
Marysville, WA – Yesterday the Marysville Education Association (MEA) members ratified a new two-year contract agreement with the Marysville School District. The District’s Board of Directors will take action on the agreement at their regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, September 4.
“We trusted the process and worked together to find a solution in the midst of challenges that are out of our control, given the complexities of the new state funding system,” said Marysville School District Interim Superintendent, Jason Thompson. “Negotiations were always professional and civil. We set the stage for work we will do together to educate lawmakers on necessary adjustments to recent legislation.”
“The District went to extraordinary lengths to listen and respond to our concerns,” said Marysville Education Association President, Randy Davis. “As one example, new teachers will now be supported by full-time mentor teachers with a model developed in collaboration between the association and District. Under the new funding system, and the guidelines around it, we were able to work together to meet the needs of Marysville students and families starting with the 2018-19 school year, while providing teachers with necessary additional compensation.”
“We share the Marysville School District’s concern with how this new system will affect Marysville in the long run,” said Davis. “Equality and equity are not the same, and our legislators must address inequities created by the new funding system during the upcoming legislative session.”
The ratified contract includes an average 14 percent increase in compensation to keep Marysville regionally competitive in pay for teaching staff. Percentage increases vary depending on education, credits, years of service and educational degrees. A summary of the new contract details will be located at www.bit.ly/MEAContract once it becomes available.
