Marysville, WA – The Marysville School District Board of Directors took action at a special meeting on Tuesday, May 29 to name current acting superintendent Jason Thompson as ‘interim superintendent’. The action allows the Board to enter into a contract with Thompson that will run from June 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019.
The action follows the announcement from Dr. Becky Berg on May 18 in which she relinquished her duties as superintendent following a recovery from surgery to remove a non-cancerous meningioma tumor from her brain.
“Dr. Berg will be missed, but her efforts helped the Marysville School District get to a good place,” said School Board President Dr. Tom Albright. “She is leaving the District in good hands and we are confident in Mr. Thompson’s ability to carry her positive work forward.”
Thompson has been serving as acting superintendent since January 2018. This fall, the school board will begin the search process for a permanent superintendent who will start on July 1, 2019.
“I appreciate that the Board is putting their faith and trust in me to take the reins over the coming months,” said Thompson. “Our school district is experiencing a lot of forward momentum with the recently completed community engagement work to update our Strategic Directions and inform decisions around the structure of our secondary schools. I look forward to working with our staff, students and families to help lead our schools and community forward.”
Although the work around the Strategic Directions will continue, the Board plans to make a decision about secondary schools in the coming weeks. Updates on this work will be posted on the District’s website at www.msd25.org.
Jason Thompson has served as the Marysville School District’s deputy superintendent since 2016, human resources executive director since 2013, and was a superintendent in the Newport School District prior to coming to Marysville.
